Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. was found dead on Saturday night, with the university making the tragic announcement. He was 22.

Cache County Sheriff's Office said deputies were sent to the Porcupine Reservoir, located around 40 minutes away from campus, at around 2:20 p.m. local time.

They had received calls about a possible drowning after a young man dived from the cliffs but did not resurface.

Seldon's body was later recovered by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team at around 9:00 p.m. According to an initial investigation, the sheriff's office says Seldon's death was a "tragic accident."

Seldon was gearing up for his first season at Utah State, having transferred from New Mexico State after spending two seasons with the Aggies where he served as a team captain.

The one-time four-star prospect out of Belleville High School in Michigan originally began his collegiate career with the University of Michigan, appearing in one game in each of his first two seasons before transferring to New Mexico State.

Utah State heartbroken by the tragedy

"Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own," Utah State interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling, who coached Seldon at New Mexico State, said in a release.

"Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre's family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss."

Utah State vice president and director of athletics Diana Sabau also extended her sympathies via a release, stating: "Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.

"We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre."
