Caitlin Clark is edging ever closer to setting a new record for the most points in women's college basketball history and she has the full backing of the current holder of the record, Kelsey Plum.

The Iowa starlet produced another high-scoring performance on Saturday, putting up 38 points in the Hawkeyes' 93-85 win over Maryland to mark another impressive display.

It means she has now scored at least 30 points in six games in a row and sured 35 points in her last four appearances. With her latest haul, her new overall total has put her on 3,462 career points, moving into second place on the all-time scoring list.

She is now only 65 points away from tying Plum's career-scoring milestone, which has stood since February 2017, and the WNBA star says she feels nothing but joy for Clark as she goes for the record.

Speaking via video call from the USA Basketball women's team camp, she told reporters: "I'm actually very grateful to that baton. I'm very happy for her [Clark]."

Plum sured former Missouri State star Jackie Stiles for the most points in women's college basketball history seven years ago, finishing her college career at Washington a month later with 3,527 points.

Plum's words of wisdom

Plum has been open in discussing her mental health and battle with depression while she was in college, and itted she struggled under the pressure of going for the record - advising fans and pundits to go easy on Clark no matter what happens.

"I , to be honest, [the record] was very much a low point in my life," Plum added. "It felt like a lot of pressure, and my identity was kind of caught up in that record

"I hope everyone in the media takes time to understand that [Clark] is not just a basketball player but a young woman that has feelings and emotions.

"She carries it with grace, but there's a lot to handle there. If anything, make sure that we show her love outside of her performance. She'll break it. I'm excited for her."
