One of the theories that has always been repeated about sport is that it prolongs life. Whether directly or indirectly, sport significantly improves a person's quality of life, but what about 'quantity' of life? That is the question that a recent study has tried to unravel by analysing the impact of sport on the life expectancy of those who practice it. The results of the study have surprised many people as it has given a twist to what almost everyone thought about sports practice
How the study was conducted
The research that has been carried out recently on the relationship between sport and life expectancy, has been carried out by Finnish researchers
The study consisted of an analysis of pairs of twins, to ensure that the initial conditions were as identical as possible. They analysed nearly 22,000 twins born between 1958 to find out whether those who play sport really do live longer than those who do not. To analyse this, they were divided into four groups: sedentary, moderately active, active and very active.
In the short term, those in the more active twin groups did live longer. However, in the long term, the data did not show as many differences in longevity. Those who were sedentary and became moderately experienced a seven percent reduction in mortality; but this was the only change that was perceived.
In fact, after conducting this study, the researchers found that both sedentary and very active people showed signs of early aging. Those who performed best in this regard were the moderately active who exercised consistently
So, is sport good?
This information may come as a shock and you may wonder whether sport is beneficial to health. Although it is not clear from this analysis whether sport really does extend life, it is good for your health and there is no debate about that
Playing sports improves quality of life, helps improve mobility, strength, endurance and mental health. It is an ideal way to stay active and keep the heart strong. It reduces obesity and the risk of various diseases.
In addition, it is important to that life expectancy does not only depend on the amount of sport you do, but also on a wide range of other factors. For example, genetics. This influences 25% of life expectancy and environmental factors 75%. The latter refers to accidents, diseases or infections, harmful habits such as smoking or food addiction, or psychological and mental problems such as anxiety, stress or depression
