It was one of the striking images of the 2022 New York Marathon. Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento, who led the race for many kilometers after an attack in the early stages, collapsed at kilometer 32, unable to take a further step, due to dehydration and cramps.

Minutes before collapsing, the marathon runner had had to stop at the toilet in what was another unusual development, as the car carrying the leader's pace had to wait for him to come out.

The athlete seemed to have recovered at first, but soon after, and due to the enormous effort of running alone at a high pace for a good part of the race, he fainted and had to be attended by the medical services, at which point he was overtaken by the Kenyan Evans Chebet, the eventual winner.
