- MLB. The secret meeting between Juan Soto and the Mets owner that decided everything: "I thought he would stay with the Yankees"
Juan Soto is a very rich man after putting pen to paper on a 15-year contract with the New York Mets that will pay him an astounding $765 million over that time.
The deal made headlines not only in the world of baseball, but in all of sports as it is the largest contract in sports history. The previous biggest deal in MLB history was Shohei Ohtani's $700 million deal signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason.
While the teams that missed out on g Soto, including the New York Yankees, will have to go back to the drawing board when it comes to their offseason plans, there is one person who could benefit from Soto landing with the Mets.
MLB insider and USA Today columnist Bob Nightingale believes Vladimir Guerrero stands to get a bigger contract as his deal with the Toronto Blue Jays is set to expire next offseason.
"If you are Vladimir Guerrero, no one's going to wake up happier this morning than Vlad," he said on the 'Four Territory' podcast.
"All of a sudden he made himself probably another $100 million, If not more just by looking at what happened with the Soto deal."
Guerrero had an MVP-level season in 2021, but has failed to replicate it since. However, after a strong second half of the season in 2024 and still just 25, it's believed the Blue Jays will have to make quite the offer to keep him in Toronto.
Blue Jays want to keep Guerrero
Recent reports suggest the Blue Jays want to keep Guerrero in Toronto.
The chances of that happening increased with Soto g with the Mets, as the Blue Jays were in the running for the slugger.
However, general manager Ross Atkins made it clear on Monday that the Blue Jays won't just hand a crazy figure in order to keep the 25-year-old in Toronto.
"We have to stay disciplined to how we view things," Atkins said.
"We are committed to always being fair and being consistent. Nothing has changed in of our pursuit of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and we are very hopeful to extend him."
