Milwaukee Brewers right-hander J.C. Mejia has found himself in hot water once again as he received a 162-game suspension on Wednesday after his second positive test for a performance-enhancing drug.
This suspension will sideline Mejia until late in the baseball season.
Mejia's second offense in three years
The 27-year-old pitcher tested positive for Stanozolol, marking his second offense under the MLB drug agreement.
His first suspension came on May 17, 2022, when he tested positive for the same synthetic steroid derived from testosterone.
Mejia, now in his third season in the league, has made nine appearances this season, holding a 1-0 record with a 5.56 ERA.
His last performance was hampered by right shoulder inflammation, which led to his placement on the injured list last month. His stint on the injured list was extended when he was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
In response to the suspension, Brewers' president of baseball operations Matt Arnold expressed the team's full for MLB'st Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, emphasizing the shared goal of eliminating performance-enhancing substances from the game.
Significant setback for Mejia
Mejia's professional journey has seen its share of ups and downs. Hailing from the Dominican Republic, he started his major league career with the Cleveland Guardians in 2021 and subsequently ed the Brewers after his rookie season. Milwaukee re-signed him to a minor-league deal during the past offseason.
This suspension serves as a significant setback for Mejia and the Brewers. Currently, the team boasts an 85-66 record and holds a commanding six-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central division.
The Brewers are within striking distance of clinching the division title and securing their fifth postseason appearance in the last six years.
While the Brewers aim to finish the season on a high note, J.C. Mejia faces an uncertain future in the MLB after his second serious violation.
