- Alarm over anomaly detected in South Atlantic related to previously unknown forces
Nature sometimes shows surprising findings and on this occasion it has happened again. In Spanish waters, more specifically in Galicia. It is a different specimen, never seen before. It is like a venomous worm that, when contracted, folds into tightly coiled rings. It is like a "living accordion".
It has been located about 30 meters deep in the subtidal zone off the Galician coast and has attracted attention because of how strange it may seem. The most characteristic thing is that it shrinks, but it does so by forming symmetrical and well-defined rings, in cases where it is fully stretched. The discovery was published in Royal Society Open Science.
Stealth hunting, predator, use of paralyzing toxins...
Science has named it "Pararosa vigarae". It is part of a group of marine worms whose most common characteristic is their stealthy hunting, predatory behavior and use of paralyzing toxins to capture their prey.
Dr. Aida Verdes, principal investigator of the discovery and scientist at the Spanish National Museum of Natural Sciences, explains: "The Galician coast is one of the most studied areas for nemerteans, and yet we continue to find new species with surprising behaviors".
