If we look back, we can see that previous generations were much more advanced than we thought. Perhaps not from a scientific, technological or medical point of view, but as a society and population. This is demonstrated by the latest discovery made in a forest in Neamt County, Romania.
A group of researchers equipped with state-of-the-art technology and LIDAR (light detection and ranging) drones have discovered an imposing fort at this site. It seems that, from the studies already carried out, it could have been built, as a defense, more than 5,000 years ago. The project was led by Vasile Diaconu of the Neamt County Museum Complex.
This discovery would not have been possible without the LIDAR technology of drones. When it comes to discovering elements hidden by undergrowth or vegetation that has grown over the centuries, there is nothing like it. "LiDAR coverage provides the means to detect subtle anthropogenic features beneath a dense tropical forest canopy," explains Arlen F. Chase of the University of Nevada.
How LIDAR technology works to find surfaces and objects
Its operation is based on five exact steps. The first thing to bear in mind is that it works with laser pulses to measure distances, something similar to a radar, but much more accurate. From here, this is how LIDAR technology works:
A transmitter sends thousands of laser light pulses per second towards a target.
Then, the pulses bounce off objects such as trees or trails.
The time it takes for the pulse to return is calculated.
Thanks to this return, the distance to the object can be calculated.
From this distance, 3D models are generated and the data obtained is used to build detailed three-dimensional models.
