A little more than a week after the start of Donald Trump's presidency, the issue of tariffs against Mexico and Canada continues to move forward and could begin to be applied in the coming days.
The tax on products from both countries entering the United States will be 25 percent, and this will be announced next Saturday, February 1, according to the White House.
This was announced on Tuesday, January 28, at a press conference with the US presidential spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, who indicated that this issue of taxes is still on the table.
Why does Trump want to impose tariffs?
Leavitt reported that this tax on foreign products is a response to the lack of help on the issue of migrants, even though Mexico has begun to receive them.
"The president has made it very clear that he expects all nations around the world to cooperate with the repatriation of their citizens. And the president has also issued specific statements regarding Canada and Mexico," the spokeswoman added.
Mexico's cooperation with the US on migration
Likewise, he also agreed that President Claudia Sheinbaum has demonstrated an important level of cooperation with migrants and deportations.
"The president is committed to effectively enforcing tariffs, just as he did in his first term," he added
So this decision would be taken by the lack of measures at the borders of both countries, although Trump celebrated that Mexico has already agreed to receive four flights with repatriated.
"In of what to expect in of border security, we have seen a historic level of cooperation from Mexico. But again, from what I continue to monitor, and that was last night, speaking directly with the president, February 1 is still on the books," he added.
