$725 stimulus payment: Does receiving this cash assistance affect other benefits such as food stamps?
Actualizado

In Sacramento, California, hundreds of families are waiting to find out if they will receive a monthly payment of $725 as part of the FFESP (Family First) pilot program. This guaranteed income initiative seeks to alleviate the economic pressures of households with young children by providing direct assistance for 12 consecutive months. Payments would begin in mid-June 2025 for the 200 randomly selected families, marking an unprecedented effort to reduce child poverty in the region.

However, as the date for the first deposits approaches, many people are wondering whether accepting this aid could affect other important benefits such as CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal or housing assistance. Will you lose if you decide to participate? The authorities have responded clearly, but also with some important caveats.

Does FFYSP affect CalFresh and/or CalWORKs?

The California Department of Social Services has confirmed that FFESP program funds will not be considered as income when calculating eligibility for CalWORKs or CalFresh benefits. This is because the program meets the exclusion criteria established for guaranteed income initiatives within the state. In addition, other benefits such as Tribal TANF, WIC, housing subsidies through SHRA and subsidized child care will also not be affected.

However, each family is advised to carefully review their situation. Although the FFCRA does not directly impact these programs, it could modify the total household income and, therefore, influence eligibility for other benefits that are not covered by the same exemption. The effect will depend on each particular case and the requirements of the program in question.

Personalized assistance, but no legal advice

Applying for the FFESP does not affect your eligibility for other public benefits, and if you are selected, you will receive a personalized meeting with the program team. During this appointment, you will be explained how this assistance could influence your current situation. However, program representatives are not authorized to offer legal advice or make formal decisions about other benefits such as SSI, Medi-Cal or federal assistance.

That is why authorities recommend that each family speak directly with their social worker or the agency that manages their benefits before formally accepting the aid. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the beneficiary, who should carefully consider whether participating in the FFESP is compatible with their overall financial situation.
