TheSupplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, offers essential to millions of people in the United States who are facing economic hardship. Its purpose is to ensure access to adequate food, both in quantity and nutritional quality.
In Texas, access to these benefits is through the Lone Star Card, a state version of the EBT card used throughout the rest of the country. It works like a debit card and can be used at any retailer that accepts SNAP.
However, the program sets precise limits on what can be purchased. It is prohibited to use SNAP to buy tobacco, alcohol, non-food items, hot or prepared meals in restaurants, or to cover the payment of services and bills.
The program does allow a wide range of fresh foods, as well as seeds or plants to grow at home, opening up the possibility of creating a family garden.
The aid is aimed at low-income households, unemployed people and childless adults between the ages of 18 and 52, who can receive benefits for a period of up to three months every three years, unless they meet certain requirements such as participating in employment or training programs.
It should be noted that these conditions do not apply to people with disabilities or pregnant women, who can access the program under other eligibility criteria.
