- Personal Finance. VA Chapter 35 Benefits: What are the two factors that determine your monthly payment?
The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) program is a gateway to new educational and professional opportunities. The MGIB-AD provides financial to eligible active-duty military , depending on the type of program and the amount of time they spend in school. Read on if you want to know how much you would receive for a 3/4-time enrollment.
The Department of Veterans Affairs MGIB-AD, also known as Chapter 30, distinguishes three types of educational programs: higher education, non-college degree programs, and on-the-job training and apprenticeships.
The MGIB-AD provides you with the money you need to pay your tuition and fees, depending on the program you enroll in. For each month you attend a higher education program or a trade or vocational school, the VA grants you $2,438 per month. But what happens if you attend less than full-time?
MGIB-AD 3/4-Time Rates
The VA may reduce the monthly amount you receive if you are enrolled in fewer courses or log fewer hours per week than they consider full-time.
If you attend 3/4-time a higher education program or a trade or vocational school, the VA will reduce your benefits to $1,828.50 for each full month you are enrolled in the program.
This amount may decrease even further if you do not attend the full month. For example, if your classes start on the 20th, you will only receive one-third of the month's benefits. If you also only attend 3/4 time, your benefits would be reduced to $609.50 for your first month in the program.
What if I'm in on-the-job training or an apprenticeship?
The VA applies different criteria for this type of education. In this case, benefits decrease the longer you are in training or an apprenticeship.
- Between 1 and 6 months, you receive $1,828.50 for each full month.
- Between 7 and 12 months, you receive $1,340.90 for each full month.
- After the first year, you receive $853.30 for each full month.
Even if it's only for 3/4-time, applying for the MGIB-AD can be the boost you need to start or complete your studies. Check if you're eligible to receive this benefit and seize the opportunity.
