- UK News. King Charles' health and cancer recovery questioned again following 'Gladiator II' premiere
It is well known that Prince Harry and Prince William of the British Royal Family do not really see eye-to-eye. Ever since Harry and his wife Meghan Markle left the United Kingdom for Los Angeles, California in 2020, the royal brothers -- the sons of King Charles III and the late Diana Spencer -- have been practically estranged, with Harry's decision to grant an interview request from Oprah Winfrey straining his relationship past the breaking point with most of House Windsor.
What is not well-known is whether William and Harry will forgive one another in the future -- or whether they will accept some form of mediation from the family's most powerful member. According to Harry, his father Charles tried to bring the two brothers back together while Queen Elizabeth II still sat on the throne of the United Kingdom -- and the situation is growing more tense, if not more dire, as King Charles III continues to battle cancer.
Charles begs Harry and William to reconcile
A age in Harry's autobiography "Spare" alleges that he spoke to William in April 2021 at the funeral of Prince Philip, the brothers' grandfather and the husband of Elizabeth II. However, the conversation soon turned fractious -- and Harry says that Charles had to step in with a heartbreaking plea for his children.
"Please, boys," Charles said. "Don't make my final years a misery."
But so far, Charles' plea has fallen on two pairs of deaf ears. Harry reportedly already has private plans in place for Christmas; the Duke of Sussex also is moving forward with a court case against the UK government's Home Office over the loss of his taxpayer-funded security.
In addition, Charles' statement to his sons -- if true -- makes it clear that the King has known for years that he is living on borrowed time. The 76-year-old monarch was diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year and has been attempting to balance his treatment with the royal duties he waited decades to undertake. Royal insiders have feared publicly and privately that Charles is spreading himself too thin and has to focus on his illness before it is too late.
That said, whether he makes a public ission about it or not, the King's spirits may be lifted if 2025 brings with it a reconciliation between the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex. Only time will tell.
