A new light has been shed on the grief of King Charles in the aftermath of Princess Diana's death in August 1997 following the recent sale of a letter.
The King penned the letter in the months after the late Princess of Wales' tragic ing. In it he described the "unbearable emptiness" following Diana's car accident in Paris.
According to the Daily Mail, the letter, which was sent to Peter Houghton, was recently sold for $2,000 at an auction.
The letter shows that Houghton was also struggling following the death, as the former Prince of Wales wrote that his heart "bleeds" for him following the death of "dear Liz". Charles added that he couldn't imagine the agony Houghton was going through, and that he "longed to wave a magic wand to transform the situation."
He then noted his "bewilderment and confusion that accompanies the removal of someone so young from the world" - a familiar feeling given Diana was just 36 at the time of her ing.
Letter still has original envelope
The three-page handwritten letter was written on Highgrove House letterhead and dated December 8, 1997. This was just months after Diana's ing.
It is signed "Charles" and still has its original envelope included in the sale. As per the Daily Express, the seller of the letter is unknown.
The sale was handled by RR Auction in Boston, with a spokesperson adding "this lengthy handwritten letter to 'Peter' expresses his sympathy upon the death of a loved one. Charles was likely particularly emotional at the time he wrote the letter, as Princess Diana had tragically ed away just a few months before in August 1997."
