Despite starting out as a closed story based on Naughty Dog's video game, 'The Last Of Us' could have more seasons than initially planned. At least that's how it appears from the statements of its showrunner, Craig Mazin, who has hinted that the plans could be to go beyond the rumoured three instalments.
A few months ago it was speculated that the series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey might need two seasons to fully develop what happened in the second video game. Apparently, the complex plot and the need to tell in detail what happens years later with Ellie and Joel led to the project being extended.
How many seasons of 'The Last Of Us' have they planned?
However, it seems that HBO Max and the creative team behind 'The Last Of Us' are planning to go beyond a third instalment. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin explained what they have in mind: "It could end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we're telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more. The great thing is that audiences want more.
However, the writer and showrunner believes that it will not be extended just to please fans, but because they feel it is the right step. "We're not going to satisfy that desire for more just to make them happy when they find out how many episodes there are. And if they don't like the length of a season because they want more, that's fine," he said.
"The number of episodes is not the important thing. What's important is that when they get to the end of the season they're like, 'That was a good season,'" he added. However, as co-creator Neil Druckmann revealed, the series will only adapt the games, so the question remains as to how much depth and development will be given to the plots of the second video game and whether it will ultimately stretch beyond a third instalment.
