Nearly seven months after his sudden ing, Liam Payne left behind a fortune that has no owner. Until today.
The 31-year-old British star died after falling from the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Argentina on October 16 last year. Payne left a total of $32,490,000 which, after expenses and debts, came down to $27,600,000.
There had been much speculation as to who would be the creditor of this sum of money. One of the names that came up was that of his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, after she revealed that she had intentions of marrying Payne.
However, court documents show that Liam would have granted Cheryl Tweedy -his ex-partner and mother of his eight-year-old son Bear Grey Payne- the power of istration of his estate. In addition, music lawyer Richard Bray, who is leading Liam's family's lawsuit to bring criminal proceedings against anyone who contributed to the singer's death, is named.
For the case, there are three people accused of homicide: the hotel manager, a receptionist and a friend of Payne, according to a statement from the National Prosecutor's Office for Criminal and Correctional Matters of Argentina.
Thus, Cassidy will not receive any of the singer's fortune since, according to UK inheritance rules, the estate of the deceased is ed on to the legitimate spouse or closest blood relative, in this case, his son. For that reason, it is likely to be placed in trust for Bear.
Liam's music career
Payne auditioned for the TV show "The X Factor" in 2008, but Simon Cowell eliminated him and asked him to audition again when he was older. Two years later he returned and, although he was not selected as a solo singer, Cowell chose him to be part of a band: One Direction.
Together with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, they formed the band in 2010 and their hit "What Makes You Beautiful" marked the beginning of one of the most famous boybands.
On March 25, 2015 the band announced Malik's departure from the group and continued until March 2016 where they announced a break. A year later, all of the group had released solo singles, including Liam who debuted with "Strip That Down" on May 19, 2017. In total, they released only one studio album "LP1", two EPs, 14 singles.
