Christopher Nolan is set to surprise audiences once again after the success of 'Oppenheimer'. The film won seven Academy Awards and was the sensation of last year, but the British director wants more. His new project, 'The Odyssey', will be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. It will be the first commercial feature film to do so. This was revealed by IMAX Corporation CEO Rich Gelfond in Cannes.
Gelfond, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, explained the conversation with Nolan. "Chris called me and said, 'If you find the solution to the problems, I'll do 'The Odyssey' 100 percent in IMAX. And that's what we're doing," he said. Barring a surprise, the film will hit theaters in July 2026 and looks set to be a great experience for the viewer with the usual Nolan stamp.
IMAX cameras exclusive to Nolan
It's not an easy task from a technical point of view. "It forced us to rethink that aspect of our business: our film recorders and our movie cameras," said Rich Gelfond. In fact, the aforementioned media points out that these new cameras are, for the moment, only for Christopher Nolan. When 'The Odyssey' is released, they will be available to other professionals.
'Oppenheimer' hits $190 million in IMAX theaters
Christopher Nolan's commitment to this technology will allow for a higher visual quality that the viewer will appreciate. In addition, the British director has already seen, thanks to Oppenheimer, that IMAX screens are to the liking of his audience. 20 percent, $190 million, of the total gross of his last film was thanks to the projection in this type of theaters.
Nolan's 'Odyssey'
Nolan's next project, 'The Odyssey', will be released in July 2026.
