Entertainment icon Dick Van Dyke, 98, has raised concern among his fans after missing several recent public engagements, including a scheduled appearance at the 2024 FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention and the 2024 Emmy Awards ceremony, where he was expected to present an award.
Dick Van Dyke nearing 99 years old
The FanX Convention, held from September 26-28, confirmed Van Dyke's absence in a statement, explaining that the beloved star of Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was unable to attend due to his health.
"At almost 99 years of age, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he is able to do at this time," the announcement read.
Despite his absence, Van Dyke expressed gratitude to his fans, who have continuously ed him throughout his storied career.
Concerns about the actor's health surfaced following his no-show at the Emmy Awards earlier in September.
Van Dyke had been confirmed as a presenter, but his unexpected absence left many fans worried.
A source close to the actor revealed that despite his advancing age, Van Dyke has always been committed to attending such events, which he greatly enjoys.
The source added, "It's not like Dick at all to not meet a prior obligation unless something serious had occurred."
The beloved actor has remained active well into his late 90s, continuing to make public appearances and share time with fans.
His dedication to his craft and to his audience has endeared him to generations, earning him a reputation as a true professional in the entertainment industry.
Van Dyke's most recent public appearance was at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month, where he attended alongside his wife, Arlene Silver, 53.
The couple, who have been married since 2012, appeared happy as they accepted an award for Van Dyke's CBS special, 98 Years of Magic.
Despite his sprightly attitude and humor, Van Dyke recently joked to paparazzi that he's "just praying" to make it to his 99th birthday this December.
Using a cane, he appeared in good spirits but acknowledged his age, telling reporters, "I'm pretty old."
Known for his roles in The Dick Van Dyke Show and countless classic films, Van Dyke remains a beloved figure in Hollywood, with fans hoping to see him bounce back and continue enjoying the spotlight he has graced for decades.
