Although Al Pacino was not nominated for any award this year, he made headlines for his brief participation during Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony. Pacino was asked to present the last category of the night, the Oscar for the best film of the year, however, people felt there was something off with the presentation.
Pacino was introduced and began by saying he was going to present the award for Best Picture and jumped right away to open the envelope and name the winner.
In less de 50 seconds, Pacino had already the winners on stage with their acceptance speech. Traditionally, there is a presentation of each of the nominated films, where everyone acknowledges each movie, however, that was completely omitted.
Given the controversy, Pacino prepared a statement, so people knew what was going on, "There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the best picture award," Pacino elaborated. "I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, but rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony. I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented."
Pacino continued, "I realize being nominated is a huge milestone in one's life and to not be fully recognized is offensive and hurtful. I say this as someone who profoundly relates with filmmakers, actors, and producers so I deeply empathize with those who have been slighted by this oversight and it's why I felt it necessary to make this statement."
According to the document, the producers sought to make the end of the ceremony more agile, since the 10 nominated films were presented throughout the ceremony.
