Mexican actress Melissa Barrera has been expelled from the cast of the film 'Scream VII' after posting on her social media s that the Israeli offensive in Gaza in recent weeks amounted to "genocide and ethnic cleansing."
The news was confirmed by the production company Spyglass - in charge of the popular franchise - in a statement released on Tuesday.
"Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech," a Spyglass spokesperson told Variety.
Barrera stands up for Palestine
The singer had previously written on Instagram that Gaza "is currently being treated like a concentration camp".
"Cornering everyone, with nowhere to go, no electricity, no water.... People have learned nothing from our stories. And just like our stories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE AND ETHNIC CLEANSING," continues the post, which s the dozens of messages Barrera has been sharing in recent weeks.
Her role as Samantha Carpenter was one of the main characters in the latest instalments of the legendary horror saga, which in 2022 released its sixth part and pocketed almost 170 million dollars at the international box office.
The filming of 'Scream VII' had not begun due to the strikes in the Hollywood industry in recent months.
Christopher Landon: It wasn't my decision
The director of this film will be Christopher Landon, who stressed on X that the barrier dismissal was not his decision.
"This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. (...) That was not my decision," Landon wrote in reference to the controversy.
Paramount has handled distribution for the last few instalments and is expected to do the same again this time around.
