The way younger generations behave shows us what society is like today. Moreover, this type of behavior faithfully reflects the concerns and sociological changes that are taking place today. Many times we are not aware that these attitudes have an origin and a reason, because they are also quite difficult to identify normally.

This is the case of one of the new trends among young people. 'Barebacking' is one of these new attitudes that young people have adopted and are beginning to reproduce in their social group, probably unconsciously

What is 'barebacking'?

The first thing to mention is that this practice is usually carried out when going to or returning from work. The reality is that the people who engage in 'barebacking' on these journeys are actually doing absolutely nothing. It basically consists of not doing any kind of activity.

Young people are starting to stop using helmets, mobile phones, books or e-books and there is a growing trend to simply be without doing tasks during this journey. These actions are mainly carried out when walking, by bus, metro or train. These are the 'dead moments' of the day when this social group wants to do nothing

What are the psychological implications and what is the reason?

The reason we need to focus on understanding young people in this new practice is the large amount of virtual connection they have during the day. If we analyze it, they are not only connected to screens for leisure, most of their jobs are related to computers, phones and online connection apps.Due to this permanent connection, young people have started to demand more real disconnection time. And these moments are the few moments that many have to do so.

The pandemic and the return to face-to-face work have also been two of the culprits for the existence of 'barebacking' in this large social group. The perennial availability that these people must have for their bosses and jobs means that they do not find other moments to stop and disconnect.

This new attitude raises many questions but also answers why young people may be showing high levels of stress and anxiety. Work takes up a large part of their lives. Digital connections, far from having improved the lives of many workers, have meant that they never get to rest and are forced to be aware of work chats, conversations with their superiors or with customers. This connection has not made them avoid, in some cases not even changed, face-to-face work; which is also an extra in their feeling of lack of rest and reflection. Young people feel as if life is running them over, without leaving them space or time to have moments of peace, and this favors the search for these moments for themselves.
