Sean Combs, known as Diddy, has begun his trial for alleged sex trafficking. Specifically, the prosecution accuses the artist of allegedly "abusing, threatening and pressuring women" to participate in "elaborate sexual encounters" with male sex workers, often under the influence of drugs, for twenty years (from 2004 to 2024).
Combs is charged with five counts: one of conspiracy to commit extortion; two of sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and two others of transportation for prostitution.
The artist's defense has explained that his is a case "about love, jealousy, infidelity and money". "Combs is a complicated man, but this is not a complicated case. It is a case of love, jealousy, infidelity, money and consensual sex," explained Teny Geragos, one of the lawyers defending her client in the trial.
In fact, one of the points on which the defense has focused is to explain what Combs is like. They have recalled his "humble" past. "His story is fascinating, but also human. He started with very little, in the Harlem neighborhood, and he worked his way up. He created a culture and produced music that marked a generation," they explained.
The video in which Combs brutally assaults his ex-girlfriend
Combs' defense has also spoken about the video in which he brutally assaults his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura. He saidthat "we take full responsibility" for these events, implying that he was speaking on behalf of Combs as well, that in this case "there has been domestic violence".
But he was keen to emphasize that "domestic violence is not sex trafficking" and stressed that all sexual relations with Combs were "consensual."
