The preliminary autopsy results for Gene Hackman and his wife,Betsy Arakawa, indicate that neither showed any signs of external trauma, according to a statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office.
The legendary actor and his longtime partner were found dead in their New Mexico home on Wednesday, leaving many wondering about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Authorities transported the couple's bodies to the Office of the Medical Investigator, where an initial examination did not reveal any external injuries. However, the official autopsy and toxicology reports remain pending, meaning the exact cause of death has yet to be determined.
Despite the absence of visible injuries, Sheriff Adan Mendoza described the situation as "unusual", even though there were no immediate signs of foul play. The scene inside the couple's home raised several concerns, particularly regarding the condition in which they were found.
Investigators noted that one of the couple's dogs was also found dead, while two others survived-one inside the house and another outside. The most disturbing revelation was the discovery of Betsy Arakawa's body in a bathroom with pills scattered nearby.
Authorities believe she had been deceased for a prolonged period, as her remains showed signs of mummification. Hackman, meanwhile, was found in a separate room of the residence.
Initially, Hackman's family suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, but investigators found no evidence of a gas leak. A search warrant obtained by TMZ confirmed that authorities did not detect any hazardous substances that could have caused their deaths.
Discovery of the Bodies and Family's Reaction
The couple's bodies were discovered by a maintenance worker, who immediately called 911. In an emotional plea during the call, he was heard saying: "Dude, they're not moving! Just send somebody out here real quick."
Hackman is survived by his three children from his previous marriage to Faye Maltese-Christopher (65), Elizabeth (63), and Leslie (58).
His youngest daughter, Leslie, shared her thoughts on his ing with the Daily Mail, stating that her father was in good health before his death. Although she expressed sadness, she itted that given his advanced age, she was not "terribly shocked".
A Private Life Away from Hollywood
Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, was best known for his unforgettable performances in films such as The French Connection, Superman, and Unforgiven.
After retiring from acting in the early 2000s, he lived a quiet life with Arakawa in Santa Fe, New Mexico, largely staying out of the public eye.
The couple's secluded lifestyle made their deaths even more mysterious, and as authorities continue their investigation, fans and colleagues mourn the loss of a Hollywood legend.
His contributions to cinema spanned decades, and his legacy as one of the industry's finest actors remains unshaken.
