The 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club kicked off with a bang, making history right from the start. Not only was it the first time in 75 years that the championship took place in the City of Angels, but it also witnessed a remarkable feat on the golf course. For the first time ever in a major championship, two players recorded outstanding rounds of 62 on the same day.

Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele stole the spotlight, showcasing their skills on the George Thomas-designed course. By the end of the day, both players stood at an impressive 8 under par, with a two-shot lead over Dustin Johnson and a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy.

Fowler and Schauffele etched their names in the record books, sharing the record for the lowest round in major championship history alongside Branden Grace. However, their journey is far from over. Despite the comfortable lead they held upon entering the clubhouse, they faced a formidable challenge from the afternoon wave of players, which significantly narrowed their advantage.

Johnson, a former U.S. Open champion, delivered a superb performance with a round of 64. He showcased his precision off the tee, hitting every fairway on the course, and was on the verge of shooting a 62 himself before a lone dropped shot on the final hole.

McIlroy, another prominent figure in the golfing world, impressed with a round featuring six birdies. However, a missed chip on the 18th hole resulted in a bogey, his only mistake of the day. With strong starts in the afternoon, both Johnson and McIlroy now hold the advantage as they gear up for their second rounds on Friday morning.

A tournament full of challenges

While the star-studded leaderboard sets the stage for an exciting tournament, the challenge lies not only in the players but also in the course itself. The first round of the 2023 U.S. Open showcased the easiest conditions in the history of the championship, with a record-breaking six rounds of 65 or lower. Whether the USGA chooses to toughen up the course with tricky pin positions and firm putting surfaces will greatly impact the outcome of the tournament.

Fowler acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, "It's definitely been long and tough... This week off to a good start, but there's still plenty of golf to be played. It's going to be tough tomorrow afternoon."

As the U.S. Open unfolds over the next few days, fans can expect intense competition, surprising twists, and the determination of golfing giants to claim victory at one of the sport's most prestigious tournaments.
