Alisson made a great save to deny Miguel Almiron early in the game and Liverpool scored twice in a space of six minutes to take a two-goal lead 19 minutes in.
Newcastle's nightmare continued, as Pope was sent off two minutes later after handling the ball outside the box.
Despite going down to 10 men, Newcastle didn't give up and missed two huge chances to pull one back.
Allan Saint-Maximin was denied by Alisson, who deflected the ball onto the woodwork, with Dan Burn hitting the crossbar just before the break.

As for Newcastle, they remain fourth, two points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham.
