- Boxing. Video shows Canelo Álvarez rising onto his tiptoes during an intense face-off with Edgar Berlanga
It all started six days ago when Oscar de la Hoya decided to post a video on Instagram inviting people to watch UFC 306, which will take place on Saturday, September 14, at the Sphere in Las Vegas. This is the same day as the Canelo Álvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight, so the ex-boxer's comment was intended to be provocative.
"One week away from the fight that nobody asked for, right? And the UFC event that everyone will be watching. Canelo fighting Berlanga, another snooze fest!" - Oscar said.
De la Hoya wasn't finished and posted on X: "I'm the PPV king and @Canelo vs @EdgarBerlangaJr fight will not exceed 100k homes. Nobody is paying $90 for this snooze fest. Just speaking the facts as always."
Despite de la Hoya's provocations being aimed at Canelo, the challenger was the first to respond. Edgar Berlanga, who is preparing in Las Vegas for the biggest fight of his career, took the time to respond to the promoter.
"You are NOT the PPV king. @FloydMayweather is your daddy." - Berlanga responded on X.
Everyone Against de la Hoya
Despite Oscar de la Hoya's efforts to boost UFC 306 at Canelo Álvarez's expense, it backfired. The president of the top MMA organization, Dana White, ed Canelo fight, stating that de la Hoya's provocations were merely attempts to stir up trouble and that both events are major spectacles that don't need to undermine each other.
In the previously mentioned Instagram video, de la Hoya sarcastically spoke about Dana White. What seemed like a friendly message, saying he was "excited to see him," ended up sounding like a jab at the UFC president.
"Dana, I can't wait to see you next Saturday, my friend. I see you had the same abdominal surgery as me. I always knew you wanted to be like me, brother. It will be great to be face to face with you. Let's go!" - Oscar said sardonically.
Although the former world champion said he would be at the Sphere in Las Vegas to watch UFC 306, White believes that Oscar shouldn't pit two major events against each other for his own benefit.
"I don't know where he's getting his tickets from, but he definitely won't be getting them from me. But I did see his comments. And he just wants to piss off Canelo. I've said it a million times, I respect Canelo. He's a great guy," added Dana White.
