- Boxing. Was he afraid? Canelo quickly ruled out fight against David Benavidez, it's revealed
- Boxing. Canelo Alvarez and his 'ego' are again in Turki Alalshikh's sights
The legendary Oscar De La Hoya ripped into Canelo Alvarez by saying he got "schooled" by Floyd Mayweather in their 2013 fight as he pointed to comparisons between the 34-year-old and Ryan Garcia.
Canelo, at the age of 21, took on Money Mayweather at the MGM Grand in the light-middleweight division but was soundly beaten, so much so that people didn't feel the judges' cards reflected the fight despite two awarding Mayweather 116-112, 117-111 scores.
The youngster found himself unable to catch the evasive 36-year-old WBA champion and No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter as he was handed the first loss of his career via majority decision, despite De La Hoya telling him he wasn't ready yet.
"He is," De La Hoya said of Alvarez being bigger than Mayweather in 2013. "But he's 21 years old, flexing his muscles like, 'I can take on Floyd. I'm the very best.'
"Guess what you got schooled. You got schooled. I mean, it wasn't even close."
The comments come as the latest instalment of their feud, which erupted after Canelo parted ways with De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions in 2020. It kicked off when Canelo accused De La Hoya of mismanagement and lack of loyalty, while De La Hoya criticized Canelo's commitment and claimed he was ungrateful.
The tension escalated with public insults and accusations from both sides, marking a bitter end to what was once a close promoter-fighter relationship and has not been repaired in the subsequent four years since.
Garcia not ready for Gervonta Davis says De La Hoya
It was perhaps a moment of de ja vu for De La Hoya when he watched Ryan Garcia agree to take on Gervonta "Tank" Davis in April 2023 as the now-banned Mexican-American lost via a seventh-round knockout.
Garcia, then 24, burst onto the scene as a highly-rated prospect with a mean left hook who wasn't afraid of anyone, but Davis proved to be a step too far and De La Hoya pointed to the hype surrounding him as giving him a false sense of confidence.
"I felt so bad for Ryan because he was sucked up," De La Hoya added. "He was a dead man.
"He reminded me of me when I fought Pacquiao. There's no chance he's gonna win against Tank, who's a beast. There is no chance."
