Not everything in life is about money. At least, that's what Stephanie White, the coach of the Connecticut Sun, implied when she said that Caitlin Clark would reject the million-dollar offer from the Big3 league to the WNBA.
Late in March, rapper and businessman Ice Cube took to his social media to make an unexpected proposal to the Iowa Hawkeyes star guard: a one-year, $5 million contract to the 3x3 basketball summer league he founded and currently manages.
The proposal generated a multitude of reactions, for and against. Clark, for her part, said, at the moment, that her attention is on the NCAA Women's Tournament, where they advanced to the Final Four. However, she did not clarify whether he would accept or reject the offer.
In this regard, White considered that Clark would sacrifice those $5 million in exchange for the much more modest salary that a WNBA team could offer her, but that in exchange for carving out her own legacy in the women's professional league.
Glory above money
Speaking to TMZ Sports, White said that, if she were in Clark's place, the decision would be easy: she would choose a career in the WNBA even if her bank would be considerably smaller.
"I'm kind of a purist. I love the WNBA. I probably would've chosen the WNBA as well, and then I would've kicked myself financially for the rest of my career," highlighted the former Charlotte Sting and Indiana Fever player.
However, White itted that Clark has already left a mark on women's basketball and that her presence has significantly boosted women's sports in general.
The future for Clark
Clark and the Hawkeyes will face the UConn Huskies on Friday the 5th in the March Madnesswomen's semifinals. If they win, they will face the South Carolina Gamecocks and the NC State Wolfpack match-up winner.
Just a week later, on April 15, the 2024 WNBA Draft will be held, where analysts agree that the Indiana Fever will take Clark with the first overall pick. If the forecasts come true, the newcomer's first rival would be, precisely, the Connecticut Sun.
