- WNBA. WNBA Winners: Complete list of champion teams
- WNBA. Have the New York Liberty ever won a WNBA championship?
It is six months of competition with 480 regular season games in which the 12 WNBA teams engage in a relentless battle, with the sole objective of reaching the final and raising the trophy that accredits them as champions.
In 27 years of history, the WNBA has crowned 11 different champions. The Minnesota Lynx, the Seattle Storm, and the defunct Houston Comets are the teams with the most championships in their showcases, with four each.
Three of the 12 teams currently competing in the league have never won a title: the New York Liberty, the Connecticut Sun, and the Atlanta Dream. On the contrary, two now-defunct teams lifted the trophy before they were folded, Houston and the Sacramento Monarchs.
A unique piece of jewelry
Officially called the WNBA Championship Trophy, the piece is a work of art in its own right. Made by Tiffany & Co., the trophy was redesigned in 2023 to reflect the evolution of the WNBA, weighs about 26 pounds, and stands 25 inches tall.
The centerpiece is the basketball resting on three tilted stems. The ball has different finishes on its four s to reflect the multi-color design of the official WNBA basketball.
The triangular base is inscribed with the names of the teams that have won the title each year to honor the champions and pioneers of the WNBA.
The MVP Trophy
The trophy that is awarded to the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Series is a three-dimensional representation of the WNBA logo woman. It is also a tribute to previous winners of the award, including Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes.
For sponsorship reasons, the piece is called the Kia WNBA MVP Trophy. It was also redesigned in 2023 by artist Victor Solomon, measures 16 inches in total, and has the names of the 16 players who have won the award inscribed on the base.
