Recently it was made public that San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will have to stay away from the team because of a "health issue" and there are many questions surrounding the situation.

How much time will he be away, when will he be able to returns and what is this medical status are just some of those questions without an answer, but at least there is one that has already been cleared.

Popovich's replacement for as long as needed will be his assistant Mitch Johnson, according to sources. He has been a right hand for coach Pop and many believe he can be the full time replacement once Popovich leaves for good, whenever he decides to do so.

Uncertainty for the Spurs

Just before the San Antonio Spurs' win on Saturday night over the Minnesota Timberwolves, news broke out on Gregg Popovich's plans. The team beat the T-Wolves 113-103 but that was not enough to avoid speculation.

"Mitch did a great job," point guard Chris Paul said after the victory. "Things happen within this league all the time, and just like with players it's 'next man up.' So shout out to Mitch."

Mitch began his coaching career back in 2016 in the G-League with the Austin Spurs and then was promoted to the San Antonio team in 2019 as he benefited from the departures of Tim Duncan, Becky Hammon and Will Hardy. Another opportunity has presented itself for him.
