Victor Wembanyama is the most exciting prospect in the NBA since LeBron James. He is seen as a truly generational talent with the world at his feet. However, he is perhaps the best talent coming into a very difficult era of social media.
There hasn't been a no.1 draft pick facing the amount of scrutiny that will follow the Frenchman around, and he has already begun to see the extent of this, even if in the most minor way imaginable.
Wembanyama went and got a haircut after he was withdrawn from the NBA Summer League by the Spurs, and fans have reacted with stronger opinions than others should have of a young man's haircut.
A photo was posted showing the 7ft 3in having a newly shaved head, and fans took this as an opportunity to make comments.
"He's now 6'11" one joked
"He looks hideous, thank God he ain't on my team looking like that," were the sentiments of another.
"Now he just needs a 12-dollar button-down from Walmart and he's just like Tim Duncan," claimed another.
Wembanyama will start the NBA season
Despite some suggestions that Wembanyama would be gradually eased into life with the Spurs, there is a sense that he could be Gregg Popovich's last truly great player, and the key to giving the veteran coach his final NBA title.
As such, there is an expectation that Wembanyama will be a day-one starter for the Spurs in 2023, and that he will instantly be the go-to presence on that team. He will need to turn the fortunes of a franchise around, especially after some disappointing campaigns in recent years.
