The Phoenix Suns have been reluctant to engage in trade talks involving Deandre Ayton all summer, but reports suggest that may change.
One of the dominoes that would have to fall for that to take place is the Portland Trail Blazers trading away Damian Lillard. Should they do so, the team are likely to head into a rebuild, which would make Jusuf Nurkic available.
John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM addressed the rumors, writing: "Let me address some of the Deandre Ayton rumors.
"The Suns have not been willing to move DA all summer because they think he fits well and there were no offers that would change that. If Nurkic was on the table I would be surprised if the Sounds didn't look into it."
Why the Suns value Nurkic
A trade for Nurkic would involve Ayton, with Gambadoro explaining why the Suns value the Blazers center.
"(Suns coach Frank) Vodel needs a defensive minded center to build his defense around and Nurkic does fit that mold," he wrote.
"This would be contingent on a Lillard trade and I [do expect] that to happen very soon. If Nurkic was on the table I would be surprised if the Suns didn't look into it because an argument could be made that (it) is an upgrade for Phx."
Vogel has praised Ayton since taking over, stating that he has hopes of restoring the 25-year-old to an All-Star level player after his recent struggles.
"I think he can be one of the best centers in the league," said Vogel.
Last season Ayton averaged 18 points on 58.9 percent shooting and 10 rebounds a game, though his effort was questioned by fans and of the media.
As for Nurkic, the 29-year-old averaged 13.3 points and 9.1 rebounds last season.
