The United States basketball team completed the mission of winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris, a tournament in which it finished undefeated, demonstrating its supremacy in world basketball. However, not all the players were able to celebrate as much as they would have liked, because moments after winning the medal and listening to their country's anthem, they were required by the health authorities to undergo an anti-doping test.
This was revealed just over a week later by one of them, Anthony Edwards, during his appearance on the Fanatic Fest Podcast with former player Jalen Rose, in which he explained that both he and Kevin Durant, also present in that conversation, as well as Stephen Curry, had to a drug test in Paris just after the end of the final.
"I'm not going to lie, me and him (Durant) had a doping test. We couldn't celebrate the win in the locker room for real because he, me and Steph (Curry) had to take a doping test or something," explained Anthony Edwards, one of the stars of the U.S. Dream Team.
Farewell to the hoax about NBA players not ing tests
There was a time not too long ago when some critics insinuated that professional NBA players did not anti-doping tests when they went to international events such as the World Cup or the Olympic Games.
But that was not true, and Edwards' recent testimony confirms it: For many years now, the IOC and WADA have been taking doping controls seriously with all athletes, so it is better for all of them, including NBA players, to stay totally 'clean', even if in the competition they play during the year, in this case the NBA, some substances that internationally are considered banned are not.
Three players in the spotlight
In this case, the three players who ed the tests played an outstanding role in the U.S. triumph. Curry led the team in scoring with 14.8 points per game, being decisive and lethal in the semifinals against Serbia and in the final against . Durant averaged 13.8 points and was the team's sixth-leading scorer until the final, where he started. And Edwards, 22, scored 12.8 points as a reserve.
Anthony Edwards himself reflected on the aforementioned Podcast about how much he enjoyed the Olympics: "Steph was No. 4, I was No. 5, Bron was No. 6 and he Durant was No. 7. When they would introduce Steph, the crowd would go crazy. When they would name me, they go 'ehhh'. But then they'd introduce Bron and they'd go crazy, and then him (KD) and they'd go crazy again. The fact that I was in the middle of them, I think that was the best moment of my life. My brother took a picture of that image and I thought it was the coolest picture I could have."
