The Spanish rider lvaro Bautista (Honda) secured the first pole position of his career at Silverstone in the official MotoGP practice sessions for the British Grand Prix. The Suzuki rider recorded the best time of the day ahead of Ben Spies, second fastest, and the Australian Casey Stoner, third fastest on the grid. The persistent rain that fell on the circuit resulted in the last official practice sessions being suspended with eight minutes still remaining.

The other Spanish riders, Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) and Dani Pedrosa (Honda), were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Hctor Barber also shone and was the fastest Ducati in practice, ahead of the two official team bikes, in sixth position. The Italian rider, Valentino Rossi, and his North American team-mate, Nicky Hayden, both fell on the same corner and seriously damaged their machines.

In Moto2, the Spanish rider Pol Espargar (Kalex) dominated practice and qualified ahead of the Italian rider, Andrea Iannone (Speed Up), and the British pair, Scott Redding (Kalex) and Bradley Smith (Tech 3). Meanwhile, Marc Mrquez (Suter) will start from fifth position on the grid.

Another Spaniard, Maverick Viales (FTR Honda), will start from pole position in Moto3 ahead of compatriot, Efrn Vzquez (Honda), the Frenchman, Alexis Masbou (Honda) and the German, Sandro Cortese (KTM).
